AMiAsZI
The project aims to contribute to Food Security in the village of Isale in Bujumbura Rural province. AMiAsZI stands for “Aménagement des Marais et intégration agro-sylvo-zootechnique à Isale”. AMAZI also means water in the Kinya-Rwandese language. Appropriate water management is a key element for improved agriculture integrating forestry and animal farming. We are looking forward to exciting results, AMAZING!
Key elements
- Sustainable development plan for the ISALE village by means of an Integrated Water Management plan (irrigation, rain water harvesting, re-forestation, anti-erosion measures and sustained soil fertility through composting and animal husbandry).
- Improved Agricultural yields through better inputs for 350 agricultural families with lands in the intensively cultivated valley areas and 200 families on the hills.
- Specific supportive actions for 500 vulnerable women or families.

PROTOS cooperates closely with the local authorities, the technical services and the population of the Isale village.
Target Groups
- Inhabitants of the Isale villlage, which is subdivided into 4 areas and 15 sub-areas, called “collines”.
- Total population of 85.000 persons, including,
- 2000 families,
- the children of 500 “vulnerable”women.
Objective
The project is being developed in an area characterised by a climate of violence and insecurity until the beginning of 2009. The area suffers a high level of food insecurity and chronic malnutrition, with a population traumatised by war. This project aims to contribute to improving the livelihoods in this specific area in a sustainable manner.
Main Results
- Managing the 35ha marsh area and the 350 ha River basin in line with the principles of Integrated Water Management.
- Improving Agricultural yields and revenues for 2000 families, through IASZ – intégration Agro-sylvo-zootechnique or the integrated approach of animal husbandry and forestry.
- Improving the nutrition of the children of 500 vulnerable women.
- Capacity building of local actors with respect to Integrated Water Management and local patronage.
- Knowledge transfer and dissemination of acquired skills and experience to other villages.
