Lake George

Sustainable access to drinking water and sanitation in 2 sub counties of the district Kamwenge and Integrated Water Resource Management in the basin of Lake George.

Key elements

  • Investments in drinking water, sanitation and hygiene in the district Kamwenge at the eastside of the lake.
  • Improvement of the living conditions for the fishing communities and the agriculture communities that live on subsistence agriculture.
  • Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM): formulation of a master plan for the basin.
  • Pilot project and research on the impact of human activities on (water)ecosystems.

Partners

2 local NGO’s: JESE and FORUD:

  • JESE: Joint Effort to Save the Environment, is operative in the sub county Mahyoro.
  • FORUD: Foundation for Rural Development, is operative in the sub county Nyabbani.

Strategic and operational partners:

  • “Lake George Basin Integrated Management Organisation” (LAGBIMO): action-focused research on fishing issues in the lake, urban water disposal, and the decline of the groundwater table in three districts around the lake.
  • District authorities and sub county governments in their role of planning and co-ordinating the water sector.

Target groups

  • 19.500 beneficiaries of the rural communities living on subsistence agriculture or fishing living around Lake George.
  • The local authorities and organisations that are responsible for the management of the lake and its basin.

Objectives

  • An improved access to drinking water and sanitation.
  • Stimulation of the integrated management of the water resources in the basin of Lake George by creating data bases,  and involving and reinforcing the inhabitants, the civil society and the local authorities into this management.

Main results

  • 12.000 additional people have access to drinking water in 2 sub counties in the district of Kamwenge.
  • 7.500 people have improved their habits concerning hygiene and sanitation.
  • All actors in the Kamwenge district take responsibility for their part in the water and sanitation sector, as foreseen by law.
  • The local actors and the organised users of the 3 districts around the lake (Kamwenge, Kasese, Bushenyi) are represented in the local structures in the field of water management, directed to the integrated resource water management of the basin.

DGOS, - the department LNE of the Flemish Government and Soresma by the  Flemish Partnership Water for Development (VPWvO) -, 11.11.11, the province of West Flanders, Blue Planet Run.
